Before starting the Firm in 2001, J. Andrew ("Andy") Coombs managed intellectual property protection at The Walt Disney Company on behalf of Disney and its affiliated companies. Andy reorganized Disney's consumer products enforcement strategy by developing training programs, working closely with Disney's licensing business and other consumer products companies, while managing outside counsel in the United States and overseas. Since Andy's tenure with Disney coincided with the explosive growth of the Internet, Andy and his staff implemented effective policies to combat the emerging problems of enforcing Disney's intellectual properties on the Internet. Some of the infringement issues Andy handled daily included domain name issues, fan sites, spam e-mail, auctions, hyperlinking, framing, banner networks, commercial sales, and licensing. Andy was also responsible for motion-picture anti-piracy, including video anti-piracy, Internet streaming and downloading content files, optical disk piracy, signal theft, and unauthorized performance.
Since starting his practice specializing in intellectual property enforcement, Andy has represented a number of Fortune 500 companies in a range of industries, including entertainment, software, fashion, and manufacturing. Andy has filed hundreds of actions on behalf of his clients and enjoys a near 100% success rate in those actions. Among these were Louis Vuitton's claims against two Internet service providers for contributory infringement. This was the first such case to go to jury trial. It resulted in a record verdict in favor of Louis Vuitton and was substantially affirmed by the Ninth Circuit in Louis Vuitton v. Akanoc Solutions,Inc., 658 F.3d 936 (9th Cir. 2011).
Andy served as General Counsel of the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition ("IACC") (2003-2008) and was Chair of its Internet Enforcement Committee (2006-2009). He remains active with the Internet Committee as the IACC's representative in the Intellectual Property Constituency of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (“ICANN”). Andy also serves on the International Trademark Association’s (“INTA”) Internet Committee.
Andy is originally from Canada where he graduated near the top of his class at Dalhousie University Law School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After law school Andy interned at the Law Reform Commission of Canada and then served as Clerk to the Hon. Justice Gerard LaForest at the Supreme Court of Canada (1984-1985). Andy was recruited to work at the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher upon completion of his clerkship. Thereafter he worked as a commercial litigator with substantial exposure to intellectual property disputes. Among the matters he handled was an early "John Doe" restraining order on behalf of the University of Southern California.
As an expert in his field Andy also worked with the Motion Picture Association of America on the formulation of an Internet enforcement strategy, the prosecution of test litigation, and the reorganization of anti-piracy programs in rapidly developing markets. Andy was also a founding member of the Piracy Working Group of the Interactive Digital Software Association (entertainment software) and worked with the Recording Industry Association of America (music) on its anti-piracy efforts.
For over ten years Andy has consistently received the highest possible peer review rating by Martindale-Hubbell® for legal ability and ethical standards. Due to the cutting edge nature of his practice Andy is regularly invited to speak at a variety of intellectual property related forums. He has been recognized numerous times for his work in the field of intellectual property law: "World Trademark Review 1000 – The World's Leading Trademark Professionals,” 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017; Southern California Super Lawyers®, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017; "2015 Top Rated Lawyer in Intellectual Property" by American Lawyer Media and Martindale-Hubbell™; “Top Attorneys in Southern California,” Los Angeles Magazine, 2012; and the Daily Journal “75 Leading IP Litigators,” 2010, 2011.
